okay this is take two of episode 95
I just blabbered and blabbered and blabbered
and it wasn't even recording
I hate when that happens
anyway I hope things are going well for you
in your corner of the world
wherever you're listening
I have had an amazingly productive day today
um and what's interesting about it
is that this was a day that I had no plans at all
and you know that I'm a proponent of planning
making plans
and honoring your plans um
but it sometimes it's really nice
and I actually most weeks
will plan a day with no plans at all
and it is crazy how productive I was
so we went to
uh Delaware to visit my family
um so we traveled across the coast
and we came back
and the next day I worked
and then the next day I worked
and then the next day I taught a class
and here we are today
no plans but I got so much done
I one of the things that I did was I wash my car
I never do that usually
Matt is the one that washes our cars
and he kind of gets on me about washing my car but um
I just felt inspired to wash my car
and he's not here for the next 8 months
he's studying Rolfing in Boulder Colorado
so he's not gonna wash my car
so Jillian Jill needed to wash her car by the way
people get confused all the time
about if I'm Jill or Jillian I'm both
so sometimes I call myself Jill
and sometimes I call myself Jillian
what else did I do
I did some yard work
I rode my bike with the dogs
and I'm also planning on um
cleaning a portion of the house
I don't think I can clean the whole house
cause that feels like a little too much
but um yeah
it's just kind of surprising myself today
how productive I'm being
and here I am
recording this podcast for you today
I wanna really make sure that I acknowledge um
what's going on in the world right now
and my heart goes especially out to those
affected by the fires in Maui
the loss the destruction
is truly heartbreaking to witness
and I can't even imagine
the immense impact it's had on the community
I know that this is quite unusual
um for Hawaii
and I'm just praying for everyone involved
we have had our own fires here this week
um not in my town
but about an hour away
but this kind of
thing is normal around here
but you know
still it's pretty scary
and even though it's not my town
there's people in another town that
have been needing to evacuate their homes
and even had to leave some animals behind um
which just breaks my heart
um I know that there's some
there are um
outreach and um
community members going out and
and grabbing the animals and bringing them
um to safety
so that's amazing
but yeah I'm praying
for all of those affected by wildfires this season
you know I really love it here
I love Central Oregon
but smoke is definitely a thing
and we've had some beautiful
clear summer days um
not too long ago
a few weeks ago
and now the forecast is just smoke
but there's something kind of
mysterious and magical about a smoky day
when we first moved here
it was very smoky
I fell in love with it here when it was smoky
so got that nostalgic feeling when the smoke is there
but as long as a fire stay away
you know it's not so bad
and you just kind of take your
take your breaks inside
as much as possible
so today we're talking about thought awareness
did you know that we have more than
6,000 thoughts per day as humans
I think that number
people used to think it was larger
like in the tens of thousands
but there is actually some recent research
that said with
on average humans
think about 62 hundred thoughts per day
and about 95% of that thinking is unconscious
so if you think
that's a big number like wow
that's a lot of thoughts
that's because
a lot of the time
we don't even know the thoughts that we're thinking
it's just unconscious
so that leaves 5%
conscious thinking
now one of the things that I teach my coaching clients
is that our thoughts create our results
so when I say results
I mean the quality of our relationships our health
the dollar amount in our bank accounts
and just generally
how we experience the world around us
okay so our thoughts create our results
hear me out
I work with a tool called the model
which demonstrates that what we think
creates an emotion
that emotion
drives our actions
and it's our actions
or inaction
that create
our results
okay so ultimately
our thoughts create our results
and this is why it's so important to practice awareness
when it comes to our thinking
and really we want to be thinking
deliberately on purpose
because we wanna create a life that's on purpose right
but we can't just decide we wanna have certain thoughts
we have to program those thoughts into our brain
and into our life
with repetition
all of the unconscious thoughts that we're having
those are already programmed in
so those just
those thoughts arise effortlessly
they're just kind of running in the background
so for example
let's just take the weather
cause I've been talking about the weather
most of us would agree that when we see a clear
blue sky it's a beautiful day
so the thought
it's a beautiful day
it's already programmed in
there's not a lot of effort involved with that thought
same with thoughts like
I don't like that
that's scary
it's not for me
we aren't aware of this programming
most of the time
we simply think it's just who we are
so by taking the time to uncover our thoughts
and paying attention to them
we are already ahead of the game
and this really ties into beliefs too
a belief is a thought
that we practice over and over again
until it feels true
so I'm sure you've heard of self limiting beliefs
right ones like
I'm not worthy
I'm not capable
these beliefs
they come from experiences or situations in life
in which you've been involved
or there were things that happened to you
and you start to believe that you must not be good
you must be bad
or you must have done something wrong
but here's the thing
we can start to uncover these thoughts
and these beliefs
and choose to believe
that we are our circumstances
or we can choose to believe that we're not defined
by our pasts
and not doomed to repeat them
we can choose to believe we're meant to live expansive
and authentic and wonderful lives instead
and here's what I wanna show you
it's not the events in our lives that shape us
but rather our beliefs about what those events mean
that's what informs our biology
and how we experience the world right
that's what informs our thinking on a day to day basis
most of us don't decide consciously
what we're going to believe
humans have the power to hurt us physically
they have the power to overpower us emotionally
as children
they can tell us to believe that we are wrong
or shameful
or somehow to blame
but they cannot make us believe them
as children
we can't make this distinction
because we're still taught what to believe
but as adults
we can choose what we will
and we will not
and will not
believe anymore
so I share this with you
because now
today is a perfect opportunity to really assess
your thoughts
and assess your thinking
and assess your beliefs
because up until now
you've probably just walking around believing
whatever was taught to you
indirectly or directly as a child
and you find yourself embodying that every day alright
so how do you start to practice this thought awareness
and really uncovering
these beliefs
in these thoughts
that may not be so beneficial
that maybe creating results in your life that
you're not quite happy with
simply become aware of them
okay this takes intention
and dedicated time at first
so start by setting a timer
for 5 minutes
or 10 minutes
and do a thought download
write down every thought that comes to mind unfiltered
we have a tendency to wanna judge
our thoughts as bad or ugly
and we don't wanna write those down
so don't try to change your thoughts
because you're judging them as bad or ugly
we wanna see what the narrative is there
we wanna see what the programming is there
because it will explain
why we have the results that we do
then after you've done that
thought download
I want you to distinguish between what is a fact
and what is a thought
a fact would be something that everyone would agree on
it could be proved in a court of law
and you'll start to see that
there are very little facts in that
thought download
it's all just a story
it's a narrative
when we practice becoming aware of our thoughts
and seeing what kind of narrative
or program is running in the background
we create more space for ourselves
to step outside of that narrative
and create something new
if that's what we desire
but it takes practice
when we learn something new it
we create a very weak neural pathway
and it's not until we repeat it enough
or add a very significant amount of emotion to it
that it becomes more unconscious and more effortless
so I'm gonna give you some examples
of how myself and some clients have changed
our narrative by practicing thought awareness
so I went from unconsciously thinking
I'll never be enough
which kept me very small
right that thought
I'll never be enough
it kept me from really putting myself out there
as someone who could help people
and when I discovered this thought
I changed it
over time to
I am sufficient and worthy
and when I really
truly step into that
and embody that I am sufficient and worthy
I don't really care what anybody else thinks
right to a degree
like I don't need someone to tell me that I am good
and I am worthy
because I believe it myself
one of my clients went from believing that
building a business would be exhausting
right and as you can imagine
if you were thinking
that building a business will be exhausting
you either aren't gonna build the business
or you're gonna create a
like an internal system or an internal process
that completely exhausts you
as you build your business
you totally make that manifest right
she went from that unconscious thought
to believing that she had complete control
over her schedule
and when she started believing that
she made her schedule what
the ideal schedule right
she had gone from teaching full time with
with with that one thought of like
this is gonna be exhausting to like
bringing that like
full time teaching
exhausting work into her practice
but when she started to really believe
that she had complete control over her schedule
she was like
okay well what do I want this to look like
here's what it can look like
I'm gonna make it look like this
I don't have to work full time
I can work three days a week and be totally happy
and then I'll just share one more another
one of my clients went from believing she was stuck
to believing she could make anything happen
right what happens when we believe that we're stuck
we stay stuck to some degree
we don't try new things
we don't access our inner resourceness
resourcefulness
when we believe that we can make anything happen
what do we do
we make anything happen
isn't that amazing right
it's been so fun watching my clients just transform
it's it's so amazing to be a part of that journey
I just have to say
and you can be a part of that journey too
for your clients
and that's freaking incredible
like not many people get that kind of opportunity
so stop telling yourself you're small if you are
become aware of why
why are you telling yourself you're small
what other of those thoughts are
running in the background
keeping you small
and then decide to change it
decide to decide to think
deliberately
put posts around your house
of what you wanna be thinking
all right these are just a few examples of ways that
bringing awareness to our thoughts
can actually help us to create more intentional lives
